While jogging on a familiar, overgrown, wooded trail near her home on a recent warm afternoon, Rachel Borch thought to herself, “what a beautiful day.” Little did she know she was about to be attacked by a rabid raccoon she would end up killing with her bare hands.

She was shy, pale and skinny, but had a bright smile, and loved to read. When she was a fourth-grade student at Fairmount School in Bangor during the 2016-2017 school year, Marissa Kennedy had several friends, three of them close, a former classmate said. “Her smile really lit up her face,” said Miranda Macy, 10.

Bangor school district officials made multiple reports to the state last year over suspicions that a 10-year-old girl who was later allegedly beaten to death by her parents was being abused or neglected, Superintendent of Schools Betsy Webb said.

Orion Krause’s father said Thursday that the son his friends and family knew was not the same person who last week allegedly murdered his mother, grandparents and his grandparents’ caretaker. “For people who knew my wife and who knew Orion, it’s like a math equation that doesn’t add up,” Alexander Krause said in his family’s Rockport home.

The Rockport native accused of killing four people told Massachusetts police officers, “I killed my family with a baseball bat,” according to court documents unsealed Friday. “I freed them,” Orion Krause then said, according to heavily redacted police reports from the Sept. 8 killings that were previously sealed.

The U.S. Senate on Saturday afternoon confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to a lifetime appointment on the U.S. Supreme Court by a slim majority, which included Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.
